Inductively Coupled Plasma vs. Direct Current Arc Spectrometry for Analysis of Minor Elements in Aluminium Baths

A validation study in order to evaluate the efficiency of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) in the analysis of minor elements (Manganese, Chromium, Copper, Iron and Titanium) in aluminium alloys was carried out. Aluminium casting samples were obtained from addition to aluminium baths of compressed powder compacts of each alloying element and aluminium (minitablets) in a laboratory crucible furnace. Digestion of solid samples was performed using HCl (c) and H2O2 35% (v/v) previous to analysis by ICPOES without any matrix separation. This solution-based method was validated considering the direct current arc spectrometry (DCA-OES) as the reference method based on direct analysis without any pre-treatment of the solid samples considered. Univariate statistical procedure was carried out, where precision < 3% and trueness of the analytical results were taken into account.
